Our Clubfoot Journey : My Baby Has What?

The night Isley was born is when our clubfoot journey began. There she was gorgeous and perfect as ever. I remember the midwife and nurse commented that her feet were turned in. They told us not to worry because it’s probably nothing but the pediatrician would take a look in the morning. I remember saying to Shayne a couple of times that I was nervous about her feet. Overall I was just so head over heels in love with my sweet girl that I didn’t care.

The next morning, the pediatrician came to our room and let us know that Isley had clubfoot. I had never heard of clubfoot before that morning. He assured us that it was correctable and left the room. I just sat there crying.

There we were in our little recovery room googling clubfoot. We discovered that clubfoot is a congenital foot abnormality in which your baby’s foot is twisted out of shape or position. The term “clubfoot” refers to the way the foot is positioned at a sharp angle to the ankle, like the head of a golf club. Turns out plenty of famous athletes were born with clubfoot. Mia Hamm, Kristi Yamaguchi and Troy Aikman to name a few. I felt a bit more at ease once we found out what we were dealing with but left the hospital feeling totally overwhelmed at the process that lie ahead of us.

I’ll be posting more of our clubfoot journey over the next few weeks. Including tips for parents and must have items for babies with clubfoot.

  1. That must have been so scary to discover after she was born and know nothing about it! I’m so thankful that our little girl was diagnosed at our 20 week ultrasound so we’ve had time to research and prepare ourselves for it a bit! We’ve got about 7 more weeks until she arrives. I look forward to hearing more about your experience!

Yes, very scary! I wish we would have known beforehand so that we could have had time to get used to the idea and be more prepared. I tend to be anxious and over worry so in a weird way I think it helped to not know. Good luck with everything when baby arrives:) Keep in touch.
